DisputedThe reconstructed form has d (the sound ð), while the conventional name Nauthiz spells it th, from a different reconstruction. In Ringe's system the sound is ð, not θ.
Need, necessity
A stave crossed by a diagonal — two sticks rubbed until they spark, the need-fire kindled in emergency. Constraint is what generates the heat that changes you.
A season of scarcity and endurance. Something cannot move yet, and forcing it makes it worse. The rune asks what you actually need as opposed to merely want. Constraint is teaching what comfort never could.
Refusing the lesson, repeating the same mistake, or sinking into victimhood. It can mean decisions driven by scarcity fear, or rushing to escape discomfort and creating a new problem.
Strip away what is not necessary and see what need is left.
The Icelandic poem ties this rune directly to 'the grief of the bond-maid'. Norse society really did practise slavery (þræll) and it was central to its economy. A 14th-century Swedish proverb runs nødh ær iw enga koster — need leaves no choice.
